The Nafferton Ecological Farming Group (NEFG) is a research unit within the School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development at Newcastle University. NEFG researchers focus on low-input and organic approaches to crop and livestock management, and are based at Nafferton, one of the university’s research farms. Since 2001, one half of Nafferton farm has been used for conventional farming, the other half certified for organic use. The farm thus provides a unique research facility for comparing and improving organic and conventional farming systems.

NEFG scientists have participated in major national and international research projects on organic food production and have contributed to a range of conferences and publications. Two full-time MSc courses are taught by NEFG academics.

Staff members are actively involved in disseminating research findings, and provide support and services to the organic industry and local communities. We have hosted open days, educational visits for local schools, and topical seminars for farmers. News items on this site keep the public informed about issues related to organic and sustainable food and farming.
